Kamppi Helsinki
In spring 2024, Kamppi Helsinki – one of the most prominent landmarks in central Helsinki – upgraded its façade lighting to a new brilliance. The goal was to combine visual impact, energy efficiency, and technological flexibility to create a dynamic and contemporary look. The project was carried out in close collaboration with Granlund, responsible for lighting design.
Kamppi Helsinki Shopping Centre façade lighting - Modern Technology and elegant execution
Lighting that lives with the city
Replacing the outdated fluorescent lighting with modern LED technology required precise planning and careful execution. The aim was to bring the shopping centre’s glass façade to life both during everyday operations and festive occasions, allowing the use of different visual themes to enhance the atmosphere. The new lighting system needed to be versatile, energy-efficient, and stylish – all without disrupting the centre’s daily activities.
Innovative lighting technology and precise design
The solution was implemented using Studio Due Slimbar fixtures, which offer strong light output and RGBW colour mixing in a compact form. A total of 240 luminaires were installed, with one one-metre fixture mounted per two glass panels. In three locations, half-metre fixtures were used to fit the façade structure precisely.
Sanna Forsman, designer at Granlund, commented:
“The project aimed to renew the appearance of the main façade facing Narinkkatori for nighttime use, creating a predominantly classic white and calm overall look, while the new technology enables dynamic lighting effects for campaigns. The project progressed smoothly from concept development to design, simulations, cost estimates, and test installations. After thorough planning, we moved on to implementation, where the installation and aiming of the luminaires had to be coordinated with the shopping centre’s operations. The programming was done late in the summer season, so passers-by hardly noticed us. Now, during the darkest time of year, the glass façade’s new life is clearly visible!”
Custom mounting brackets were designed for the new fixtures, enabling a quick and tidy installation. The installation and programming were carried out under the direction of Audico’s sales and design teams in close cooperation with the client. Project Manager Mika Grönberg noted:
“The collaboration went excellently, and the project was completed without any challenges. The result is a visually impressive and functional lighting solution that fully meets the client’s needs.”
A versatile control system
At the heart of the lighting system is a Pharos Controls Designer series controller, offering extensive options for scheduling and managing lighting effects. The system adapts flexibly to different situations, allowing adjustments according to time of day and sunrise. With Swisson Ethernet-DMX converters, routing DMX signals between floors and sections was straightforward, ensuring flawless system performance.
Remote connectivity enables fast and effortless programming, updates, and maintenance from anywhere. This feature allows quick responses to changing needs and efficient troubleshooting.
Lighting that captures attention
The new lighting not only enhanced the visual appearance of the shopping centre façade but also brought significant energy savings. The glass wall has become a dynamic and attractive element that enriches the urban environment, especially during dark evenings.
Mari Ahonen, Shopping Centre Director, commented:
“A fantastic project that introduced something new in lighting. Even the challenging modification work was carried out smoothly in cooperation with the tenants.”
The flexibility of the control system allows the use of different themes and effects, supporting the shopping centre’s marketing and brand visibility. During festive seasons and campaigns, the lighting serves as a visual highlight, attracting visitors and strengthening the centre’s appeal.
Tapio Järvinen, Audico’s Project Sales Manager, summarised:
“This project is a great example of how the combination of technology and innovative design can bring both experiential and practical solutions to urban spaces that serve the client for years to come.”
Summary
The Kamppi Helsinki façade lighting project demonstrates how successful collaboration and expertise can result in a lighting solution that not only enhances the building’s appearance but also reinforces its position as a striking and attractive destination. This modern and energy-efficient solution draws attention and serves as an example of the lighting concepts of the future.
