Finlandia Hall lighting renovation awarded Lighting Project of the Year 2025
Audico Systems and Tunto combined their expertise in the Finlandia Hall lighting renovation to create a solution where advanced technology and the original aesthetic are seamlessly integrated.
Alvar Aalto’s legacy combined with contemporary lighting technology
Designed by Alvar Aalto, Finlandia Hall is one of Finland’s most recognised architectural landmarks. Lighting has always been an integral part of the building’s architectural whole.
As part of the refurbishment, the lighting was upgraded using energy-efficient LED technology while preserving Aalto’s original forms, materials and luminaire aesthetics. The key strength of the solution lies in the way modern technology is integrated directly into the original luminaires, enabling programmable, event-ready lighting without the need for additional or visually intrusive fixtures.
A technically demanding project requiring careful planning
The project involved the refurbishment and upgrade of a total of 770 original luminaires designed by Alvar Aalto, representing 18 different designs. The existing luminaires were fitted with both factory-made CLS Ruby and Ruby Compact solutions as well as custom-designed LED light sources developed specifically for the project.
Audico Systems’ role was particularly significant in the technical design and implementation, ensuring that the new lighting technology functions seamlessly within the original luminaires and meets the requirements of modern event production.
“This project demonstrates how technological innovation and respect for heritage can go hand in hand. Through a successful upgrade, we have brought Finlandia Hall’s lighting into the present day while preserving its functionality and aesthetic value for future generations,”
says Tapio Järvinen, Project Sales Manager, Audico Systems.
Lighting that supports event production and flexible use of spaces
The renewed lighting system allows the atmosphere and visual character of the spaces to be adapted directly through the system for different types of events. This supports Finlandia Hall’s role as an international venue for culture and events, while improving usability and energy efficiency well into the future.
The award further underlines the success of the project: the lighting renovation is not merely a technical upgrade, but an essential part of Finlandia Hall’s overall renewal.
